 Dr. Elise Olsen is the medical director of the Duke Laser Hair Removal Clinic. Dr. Olsen is a professor of both dermatology and oncology at Duke and is the founder and director of the Duke Dermatopharmacology Study Center and the Duke Hair Disorders Research and Treatment Center.

 

Dr. Olsen serves a consultant to dermatologists from all over the world who have patients with difficult to diagnose or treat hair disorders. She is particularly interested in the conditions that cause hair overgrowth and was part of the original group of investigators to evaluate laser as a means of removing hair.

 

She is a founder and past president of the North American Hair Research Society. Dr. Olsen lectures widely on hair disorders, has written many articles on the subject and is the editor of two editions of the internationally recognized textbook, "Hair Disorders: Diagnosis and Treatment," published by McGraw-Hill.

Emory Dermatology Day was started over 17 years ago in order to provide an opportunity to blend clinical dermatology with new areas of investigation relevant to practitioners of our specialty. In addition to the series of interesting talks given by Emory Faculty members on a broad array of stimulating and informative topics, the Robert and Patricia Fine Lecture is also given each year which honors an outstanding clinician and investigator who has significantly advanced our understanding of skin diseases and cutaneous biology.

Carlos H. Nousari, MD

Carlos Nousari, M.D. is nationally and internationally recognized as a leading authority in dermatoimmunology. He is a clinician, a researcher, and a prolific author in the areas of dermatoimmunology, dermatopatholgy and immunofluorescence. In particular, He has conducted extensive research in autoimmune blistering diseases, connective tissue disorders, and vasculitides..

Prior to joining Dermpath Diagnostics in June, 2004, Dr. Nousari served as co-director of the Division of Immunodermatology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, and a chairman of the Department of Dermatology and Director of Dermatopathology and Immunodermatology at the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston. Dr. Nousari is currently the Director of the Institute for Immunofluorescence and a Professor of Dermatology at the University of Miami.

Topic: Selected Aspects of Dermatologic Diseases in
African Americans

 

Upon completion of this lecture, attendees will better be able to:

  1. Utilize more effectively current modalities to treat keloids

  2. Recognize and manage STDs more prevalent in the African-American community, especially in Georgia

  3. Avoid over-zealous intervention for variation of normal seen commonly in African-American skin

 

 

Theodore Rosen, M.D.

Houston, TX

After attending Michigan State University as a National Merit Scholar, Dr. Rosen graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School cum laude. He then trained in internal medicine at the University of Alabama and in dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine. He currently serves as Professor of Dermatology at Baylor and Chief of Dermatology at the Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Rosen serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and was also recently elected Vice-President of Texas Dermatological Society. He is a past-President of the Houston Dermatological Society and past-Chairman of the Dermatology Section of the Southern Medical Association.

Dr. Rosen has written over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and authored 3 medical textbooks. He has been a plenary guest speaker for the American Podiatric Medical Association, the American Urological Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the national dermatology societies of Italy, France, Argentina, Korea, Taiwan, and Mexico. He has been a guest speaker at 25 American state and most major metropolitan Dermatology societies. He has also served as a visiting professor at over 75 American and foreign universities and teaching hospitals. His clinical research interests include diagnosis and treatment of both STD and non-STD genital lesions, skin diseases in African-Americans, clinical mycology and cutaneous immunomodulation.

On a personal note, Rosen is an avid lifelong numismatist, a devotee of horror films and a sometime Elvis impersonator. He is married to his college sweetheart and has four adult children and one old cat.

Vernell St. John, CPC, CDC is a consultant in coding and practice issues for the American Academy of Dermatology Association.  Prior to joining the AAD staff in 1994, she had worked sixteen years in a dermatology practice.  She is the assistant editor of Derm Coding Consult, staff liaison for the AAD Coding & Reimbursement Committee and the AADA staff to the AMA/CPT Editorial Panel.  She has given numerous coding presentations to physician groups and coders.  Vernell assists member physicians and their coding staff regarding coding and reimbursement issues as well as practice management issues. Vernell is a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders and of the Professional Association of Health Care Office Managers.  She is a certified professional coder and a certified dermatology coder.
